Cool Night's Sleep

Now that we’ve reached summertime, you’ve probably noticed that the heat’s been turned up a bit, and this could be affecting your sleep quite a lot.

To ensure high-quality sleep, it’s important to have the best sleep environment possible, including your bedroom temperature. Ideally, your bedroom should be about 16-18°C, but if you find that it’s higher when you’re trying to get to sleep, you might be finding it difficult to cool it back down.

Whilst we might be fond of finally getting some warm sunshine in the day, your bedroom probably isn’t very comfortable if it’s like a furnace in there. So, here are some tips and tricks to help you stay cool during these warmer nights.

  • Increase air circulation in your room by opening doors and windows. This will allow a cool draught to pass through your bedroom.
  • If you have an attic, open the hatch. Since hot air rises, it will be able to go up into your attic, leaving your bedroom with cooler air.
  • Keep your curtains and/or blinds shut during the day. This will block sunlight from directly entering your room, keeping it cooler during the day, meaning it won’t have as much heat to retain at night.
  • Use an electric fan. This can be improved further by putting a bowl of ice in front of it to blow even cooler air through the room.
  • Get a duvet with a low tog rating, or get rid of your duvet and blankets entirely, and just use a cotton sheet as cotton is very good at absorbing perspiration. This is why it’s also suggested that you wear light cotton nightwear.
  • Too much caffeine, alcohol or even having a big meal not long before bed can make you feel hot in the night as you may find yourself dehydrated or with an over-active digestion. It’s much better to drink plenty of cold water in the evenings and maybe even keep a glass by your bed.
  • If you have long hair, keep it tied back to keep your neck free of it. Having hair around your neck can make you feel much warmer.
  • Place a hot water bottle filled with ice-cold water near your feet or cool your socks by putting them in the fridge during the day, so you can wear them at night. Keeping your feet cool keeps the overall temperature of your skin and body low.
  • If you share a bed, make sure it’s big enough for both of you. The minimum width of your bed should be 5ft.
  • Get a bed that has extra hygiene features like temperature-regulating properties and improved moisture absorption.
